Subterranean water management — clay below, capillary action, drought-resilient beds.
An olla is an unglazed clay pot buried up to its neck in the soil, filled with water, and capped. Water seeps through the porous clay wall by capillary action — drawn out only as the surrounding soil dries. The roots grow to the pot, the water goes to the roots, and almost none of it is lost to surface evaporation or runoff. This is the Water phase delivered through an Earth phase body: the two elements working as one.
The buried-pot method is one of the oldest water techniques in the world — the agricultural records of ancient China include it, and the principle has never needed improving, only remembering.
The pot must be unglazed terracotta — glaze seals the pores and stops the whole mechanism. Flower-pot ollas (two pots joined mouth-to-mouth, bottom hole plugged) are the classic DIY version. One litre of pot roughly waters one plant; a 5–10 litre olla covers a small bed.
On the sandy, free-draining ground this land tends toward, ollas shine: the soil's natural porosity is exactly what the capillary mechanism needs, and water that would normally vanish into the sand is held at the root. Pair with a cover-crop mulch to slow surface drying further — Water and Earth in their generating order.
